Historical Information

This Amati model represents a merchant ship, rigged as a schooner, built at the begiinning of the last century and mainly used as a coal carrying ship (collier). The Hunter was initially part of the British merchant navy. Then the Royal Navy took it over for it's sailing qualities, especially fit for the North Seas. It was transformed into a Q-ship when war broke out. As with all Q-ships, it underwent changes at the dockyard in Queenstown, Ireland, from which the name Q-ship was derived. It was equipped with false structures that concealed it's deck weaponry. This structure could be easily removed and the hidden deck guns could be used to fire against the enemy, especially submarines.
